What Is Genuinely Useful
Content Generation for Wireframes
Generating realistic placeholder copy, product names, and data for wireframes used to take time. Now it takes seconds. Realistic content makes wireframe reviews dramatically more productive, because clients react to the real thing rather than Lorem ipsum.
Background Removal and Image Editing
Adobe Generative Fill and Remove Background have been genuinely transformative for asset preparation. Tasks that took 20 minutes of precise masking now take 30 seconds. Not perfect for every use case, but accurate enough for 90% of them.
Code Generation from Design
Figma Dev Mode combined with tools like GitHub Copilot has meaningfully improved our developer handoff workflow. For standard components -- buttons, inputs, cards -- this saves an hour per component.
What Is Still Hype
AI-Generated UI Designs
The tools that promise to generate entire UI screens from a prompt are not ready for professional use. The outputs look like the average of the internet design -- competent, familiar, and totally undifferentiated. You can use them as inspiration, but you will spend more time fixing results than starting from scratch.
Design-to-Production Code
Despite significant investment, the gap between Figma design and production-quality code is still not bridgeable by AI alone. The generated code works -- but it is not the code you would want to maintain.
AI makes average faster. It does not make great easier.
The designers thriving with AI are the ones who have identified which parts of their workflow are mechanical and which parts require genuine creative thought. They are spending less time on the former and more on the latter.
